#36-Finals Essay
Something that is good about South Central is the Free food programs, Free Clinics and other good stuff. Some ways we can improve is how our streets look like since the first thing people usually look at first. The economic problems we stop wasting it on unnecessary things. In the 3 years and 1/2 that I’ve been living in LA it’s been pretty good. And school is school so there is no choice but I like it. The three most important event that have had the greatest impact on making South Central,LA what it is today are Watts Riots, LA Riots, and Crack Epidemic.
The Watts Riots is one of the main events that changed South Central to what it is today. On August 11,1965 a white police officer pulled over Marguette Frye for driving recklessly he had also failed a sobriety test. The officer decided to arrest him but he also arrested his mother and brother he also even arrested a guy that had spit at him. That was one reason people started to riot but other reasons were the unemployment, bad schools and the education and also because of the police brutality. The riot lasted 3-5 days, 34 people died, and 40 million$ in damages were the results of this rioting.
Another event that changed South Central is LA Riots. This event happened in 1992 when Rodney King was pulled over on Lake View Terrace in San Fernando for speeding at 110mph. It also started when a 15 year old black young woman named Latasha Harlins was shot in the head by a Korean Lady named Soon Ja Du. She was the owner of the liqour store she assumed Latasha was stealing so she shot her. But the main reason was the virdict 4 white police oficcers recieved,”Not Guilty”, and for the virdict of Soon,”500$ fine and probation” that pissed everybody out. 53 people died and 1billion$ worth in damages were the results. This is important because because benecial places were built.
Finally, another event that changed South Central as it is today is the Crack Epidemic. The Crack Epidemic is when there is cocaine in the streets. The CIA would sell the cocaine to get money to fight Sandinista (communist who revolted in Nicaragua). All of this cocaine hurt families and even destroyed them. All of this made the crime rates increase. The War On Drugs began the government try to stop the drugs on the streets but they mainly targeted young Black and Latino men. This is important because if the government would not started to sell drugs they wouldn’t be any on the streets right now.
Three events that changed South Central was the Watts Riots and LA Riots and the Crack Epidemic. Watts Riots and LA Riots led to having beneficial places like hospitals and clinics and things like that. The Crack Epidemic led to people how consuming cocaine thanks to the government. I don’t know if South Central will change in the future but that would be great. Having a better community and environment would help everybody.
#28-Leadership Writing-Homework
The greatest leader that we studied was Bunchy Carter. Bunchy was born on October 12, 1942. He started off as a gang banger from the Slausons. Then he became the leader of the Slausons and known as”Myer of the Ghetto.” He ended up in prison. After prison he joined the Black Panthers. He convinced his ex gang members to joined the Black Panthers with him. While he was alive and with the Black Panthers he held free breakfast programs to feed others, and free Health Clinics around the U.S. That is why he showed leadership. I choose Bunchy because showed me that a person who had done bad and turn his life around and do good things now. One think that I can do to show leadership is take initiative and do my best at all times.

#27-South Cebtral-Homework
Growing up in South Central is a unique experience. Somethings that make South Central special are the opportunities we have here. The people are always united for when we need them. The school are free to attend no matter rich or poor so there is no excuse to not attend school. The opportunities we have here are really high. The unity of the people is incredible its like they are there when we need them. The schools are free which is all we need to become someone important in life. I like living in Los Angeles. I’ve been living here for 3 years and it is pretty nice. Everyone I know here are pretty nice when you actually meet them.
The Movie is called Music We Listen To. Our topic is Music. People hear the music to relax when they are mad instead of fighting. Jackie, Vanessa, Alicia, and Me is the movie. Our movie is coming out on March 24, 2011.
Community Walk Reflection
1. The Broken Window Theory is when you see a place that is really mess up, you are more likely to do it also.
2. On Avalon I saw that there was trash (Mc.Donalds) by were the cars park. Another uncared for place is on 108th and Avalon right in the corner was a lot of trash dumped. Also, it seemed like an old water tank that was instead of white it was brown and black, and it was tagged all over the place. On 109th and San Pedro right at the corner there was a nasty looking fence that was brown instead of silver and it was all bend down. These are all examples of uncared places that may be able to proof the Broken Window Theory.
3.Some other observation that I saw were that there can be some nice looking places in out community. For example, I saw an Apartments that were really nice, the lawn was nice green it was really really nice. Another example is a redish-brownish house that had really nice cut plants. Some business I saw were a liquor store, an auto repair, and a bakery. This tells me that our community for the most part dirty and not taken care of.
